Chapter Eight

GERRY HAD EVENTUALLY won over their waitress by asking her to take a shot with them. She’d even joined in on their discussion about sex and power with a few stories of her own. Eventually, though, she had to acknowledge the stern looks of her manager and escort them to the door as the last patrons of the night.

Thom took a deep breath as they walked outside after the waitress closed the door on them. He unconsciously unbuttoned three of the buttons on his sea-green shirt and rubbed his chest because it felt hot to the touch after all the wine and delicious food.

“You don’t like keeping your shirts buttoned do you?”

“You’re one to talk,” said Thom. “You could’ve been wearing a thong this morning.”

“I’ve tried. They’re not comfortable when you’re climbing rope.”

Thom swam in a haze of low-key endorphins. “It was so hard not to strip you down right there after you won and fuck you in front of everybody.”

“Glad you didn’t,” Gerry said with a laugh. “I stunk to high heaven.”

“I’m sure I could have dealt with it.”

Gerry continued to laugh. “I didn’t know you were such a voyeur.”

“I’m not. But watching you pick up those weights like you were lifting pebbles and tossing them a hundred feet. It was… titillating.”

“Oh yeah, is that why you like me—I’m some big, strong man?”

“It’s a nice perk.” After a pause, Thom continued with, “And who said I liked you?”

They were alone in the gravel parking lot. The restaurant was down a tree-lined driveway, well away from the busy highway that had taken Thom into LA County. He’d met Gerry here and was committed to leaving the way he came. The moon hung full and heavy in the sky, shining down on them like a spotlight. They slowly walked toward Gerry’s blue Jeep Wrangler, close enough that their shoulders touched.

“You’re still leaving?” asked Gerry.

Thom nodded. “Abram might be cool with me skipping lunch and dinner. But he’ll have my hide if I don’t show up at his friend’s club. Especially since I’m gonna bail on them again tomorrow.”

“I'm wiped. Otherwise, I’d find a way to force awkwardly accompanying you.”

“Yeah, Teddy and Abram won’t be distracted by all the meat walking around. They might have some words for you. I don’t want even to entertain the idea.”

“What about the third guy…?”

“Carlos,” Thom finished for him. “Carlos is just, Carlos I guess. He and Abram dated when we first started hanging out. Never left really? Handsy but a great wingman. I’m sorry for him—the way he touched you.”

“Don’t worry about it. I figured it was a small penance to talking to you.”

Thom grinned at that. “You’re not gonna drive home are you?”

Gerry looked at his Jeep longingly. “Nah, my friend Trawn is giving me a ride. He’s the sous-chef who got us the table.”

When they reached the Jeep, Gerry turned and put the Jeep at his back. Thom crossed his arms at looked at Gerry. Thom nodded, making the decision fast enough that he wouldn’t back out of it.
